In order to benefit from exercise you need to workout at least 3 times a week. Over half of all people that join a gym leave after 6 months, and of those who carry on visiting the gym, 40% do so only once a week. You should try to make exercise part of your daily routine either before or after work.

To lose weight you need to burn off more calories than you consume daily, by burning calories that you store as body fat. You can burn off calories in many ways:

  • Continuous aerobic exercise
  • Interval training
  • Circuit training
  • Sports and activities

Whichever activity you choose, you should make sure that your heart rate is raised 70% of your maximum heart rate.
 
The greater the percentage of your maximum heart rate that you exercise at, the more calories you will burn. You should include some harder work where you push you heart rate up to 80-85% of your maximum heart rate. It is important however not to burn yourself out, it is better to work at medium intensity for 20 minutes than high intensity for 10 minutes.
